Dynamic Bus Platform Allocation

Overview

The public transport hubs located in the heart of cities require maximum utilization of resources in terms of space and time. Most public transport facilities face challenges in utilizing space effectively. The optimization of public transport with such constraints requires innovative approaches such as ARS T&TT Dynamic Bus Platform Allocation system (DBUS). ARS T&TT’s operational excellence and the user experience at public road transport facilities were combined to design such a key solution that optimizes platform utilization and improves overall comfort of passengers at bus stations.

DBUS assigns buses arriving at the terminal to available platforms, coordinates their line/service numbers and calculates the expected time of arrival and departure. At its core, DBUS is a dynamic in-terminal platform allocator integrated with sensors and presentation on passenger information displays. It provides seamless interfaces with the back-office systems of the transport organizations and allows for up to 25% more passengers throughput.

Dynamic Bus Platform Allocation

Solution advantages

Transport system efficiency

Coordination of buses results in higher efficiency of the public transport system, lowered operation costs, lower downtime, and increased passenger throughput. Helps for better crowd management at the terminal and ensures quicker and safer boarding and disembarking from buses at consistent platform slots.

Real-time information

Up-to-date bus information is obtained via GPRS. The system allows for the estimation of the arrival time and communicating it with the public transport users. The information shown in the bus allocation and passenger displays help the driver and public to correlate, as the bus approaches the platform.

Increased safety

Higher coordination and management of the public transport hub increase the safety of the passengers and reduce the risk of small collisions. On-time reporting of the incoming bus schedule helps the commuters to efficiently manage their time and reduce the waiting period.

Smart urban planning

Increased operational effectiveness allows for a more efficient use of urban space in city centers, optimizing the land use. Enables the public transport operating firms to run smooth terminal operations within limited space and cost. The system ensures increased space utilization up to 75%.

Dynamic Bus Platform Allocation

Nijmegen central bus station

The Dynamic Bus Platform Allocation system was implemented in 2010 and upgraded to the latest standards. The later update was made to align the DBUS with the latest version of the V-COM system to ensure effective communication and data transfers. The DBUS is still in use and allows for an optimized usage of the bus platform. As a result, fewer platforms need to be used for day to day operations, the public transport throughput is maximized, and the station coordination is smooth and effective.
