ORBIS Incident Detection

Overview

The ORBIS Incident Detection System detects traffic jams, sudden deceleration, stopped vehicles, objects on the road, and with the support of a combined video and radar sensors. Images are analyzed, in case of detection of any of these examples, the Traffic Management Center is alarmed, the visuals are presented. Once the system detects that the event has normalized (or the detected issue was rectified) the alert is ended by sending a ‘clear’ message. By ensuring a smooth traffic flow, the system contributes to the improved road network throughput, travel time, and air quality. Based on the selected configuration, the system capabilities increase, such as coverage of lanes, accuracy of detection, and availability.

System objectives

ORBIS Incident Detection System helps to reduce well known, common problem areas for any city/road transport authority.
  • Driving safety risks
  • Traffic jams and delays
  • Reduced air quality
  • Economic damage

Main application areas

ORBIS Incident Detection provides a comprehensive solution for traffic incident management, enabling early detection and response to incidents. System enables real-time traffic monitoring which includes, but is not limited to:
  • Urban motorways
  • Tunnels
  • Bridges
  • Special crossings

Solution advantages

Cost efficiency

The integrated hardware combination of two sensors, radar and video, in one condensed road side system results in reduced implementation and maintenance costs. The system is integrated in the current traffic control system with very limited structural or organizational impact.

Optimized resource usage

Configurable streaming video quality (low, medium, or high - image resolution, frame rate and compression method adjustment) helps to run the system at a flexible cloud-based image processing server or at physical environments. The system can be easily expanded and upgraded on demand.

User-friendly interface & features

Dynamic image quality control features support quick enhancement of output quality even after the alert generation. The Traffic Management Center uses a dynamic map, allowing all video streams to be visualized. The operators can adjust the camera (pan, tilt, zoom) and address the incident.

Increased traffic safety

Real-time detection of critical incidents helps the authorities to take immediate precautionary actions to prevent incidents. Quick release of traffic directly after the incident reduces traffic congestions.

Case study

Highways England

ARS has implemented ORBIS Incident Detection on a section of the M1 motorway in the UK, where frequent incidents of stopped vehicles have caused significant disruption to traffic flow. The solution has been installed on existing lighting columns and gantries, allowing for non-intrusive deployment without causing any interference to road-users or emergency responders. Traffic Radar sensor and the Vision Analytics camera work in tandem to accurately detect and locate stopped vehicles across all lanes of the motorway. The Base Unit processes the sensor data and interprets it into object data, enabling the detection of stopped vehicles and the creation of alerts.

Since implementing, Highways England has seen a significant improvement in incident response times, leading to reduced congestion and improved safety for road-users. The system has also enabled Highways England to proactively identify potential incidents and take preventative measures, further enhancing traffic flow and safety on the motorway.
