A Journey from Thiruvananthapuram to Surat for Driving Smart Traffic Goals

Technopark-based ARS Traffic & Transport Technology, plays a key role in the expansion of Surat’s transport systems and bus operations.

The city of Surat in the State of Gujarat is one of the best planned cities in India along with six major cities under the Smart Cities Mission. The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has bagged three awards from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for Best Integrated Mass Transit Project, Best Intelligent Public Transport Services and Commendable City in Urban Transport Initiative. And now for the Kerala connection; it is a company from the State – ARS Traffic & Transport Technology (T& TT) India, a subsidiary of ARS Traffic & Transport Technology BV from the Netherlands, headquartered at Technopark, that is playing a key role in the expansion of Surat’s transport systems.

As part of the internally coded “Vision Gujarat”, ARS T&TT India is working with SMC to implement “Integrated Transit Management System” [ITMS] and “Integrated Traffic Control System” (ITCS) contracts under the Smart City program.

ITMS, now under ARS T&TT, manages all operations pertaining to the public transit bus network in Surat which includes city and specialised buses under the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) scheme. The scope of the project includes scheduling, tracking, monitoring and optimisation of bus operations in terms of cost/convenience, depot management and public information services through displays, apps and websites. ITCS, currently under implementation, will bring state-of-the-art traffic managemen capabilities to the city of Surat.

Continuing to work on this vision, during the ninth edition of Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in January 2019, Aja Bhadoo IAS, Municipal Commissioner, Vadodara and Jan Linssen, CEO ARS T&TT, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the presence of Vijay Rupani, Chief Minister of Gujarat with the objective of making products and solutions from ARS T&TT available to the city. Through this MoU, ARS T&TT will be involved in smart traffic developments executed in Vadodara as part of the Smart City initiative.
